About DanceSport
Danceport describes dance as a sports activity; the term usually denotes competitive ballroom dancing.
The revival of ballroom dance championships in Sri Lanka occurred in the mid ‘80s. Since then, the interest in ballroom dancing has burgeoned to the point where dance schools are springing up all over the country to cope with the influx of students.
As a result, there are many young dancers who are eager to improve their dance skills; this can be done by taking medal tests and competing in dance championships.
However, due to the lack of proper training and the allocations of funds for such activities, it is not possible to accommodate these requirements with the necessary regularity. Given the proper training however, our dancers have proven in the recent past that they are viable contenders even in the international arena.
Although ultimately it is the dancers’ dedication and commitment to the sport that will see them through and ensure that they gain a spot in the international limelight – they need the continuous support of dance promoters, instructors and sponsors to ensure they reach their goal.
